Materials – R&D scenario analysis


An analysis of scientific papers published in the last 10 years (2008-2018) has been developed, selecting relevant papers through the Derwent Innovation tool. The tool permits to select papers within the Web of Science database.

Web of Science includes over 20,000 peer-reviewed, high-quality scholarly journals published worldwide (including Open Access journals); over 190,000 conference proceedings; and over 90,000 editorially selected books. It gives access to multiple databases that reference cross-disciplinary research, which allows for in-depth exploration of specialized sub-fields within an academic or scientific discipline.

A general search to define technological advances object of scientific research in the last decade was performed aiming at selecting efforts and results carried out in the field of innovative materials for Additive Manufacturing, targeting in particular metallic ones.

Starting from the general keywords related with Additive Manufacturing (AM) and 3D printing, coupled with the keyword addressing metals, the query was defined as reported in the table, in line with the search performed for the selection of patents related to materials.

The query used additional filters to exclude results non-inherent to the scope of the present work.

The query selected a total of 526 scientific papers published between 2008 and 2018 related to materials for AM. The temporal trend include 2018, although results are still partial.

The trend of scientific papers per year is reported in the following graph.

The submission of scientific papers shows a slightly positive trend, with a slow decrease in correspondence of 2016 and 2017.

Among the author’s affiliations, the Organization that emerged as the most active in the field of copper exploration R&D are reported in the following graph.

The list of most active Organizations is led by the Department of Energy (DOE) of United States, followed by another american player, the Pennsylvania State University. The analysis of their publications demonstrate a strong collaboration between the two entities in this field of research. The third position is held by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, a German research organization, with high expertise in the field of AM. Chinese Academy of Sciencies and  Nanyang Technological University, based in Singapore, held the fourth and fifth position by number of submitted papers in the period of interest.

The analysis of the sources from which the selected articles were published permitted to select the most relevant Journals hosting publication on this technology field. The Journals emerged as the most recurrent are reported in the following graph.

The following map was draft utilizing the proprietary Themescape tool of the Derwent Innovation suite. Themescape performs a semantic analysis on the titles and abstract of papers and groups papers on the basis of top recurrent words. “Hills” represent a concentration of papers in correspondence of common keywords. Each point represents a papers of the dataset. Analysing the map is it possible to note some returning topics in correspondence of peaks.

In the following figure the map of recurrent topics automatically generated by the Themescape tool, on the basis of a semantic analysis of title and abstracts of papers is reported.
